The mother by GWENDOLYN BROOKS is a great poem, at least I thought so. This poem is about women whom get abortions. I always asked myself if women who get abortions had any regrets or thoughts of what it could've been. And even though for whatever reason they did what they did, I always thought that there had to be some kind of love for that being that didn't get the chance to live. I don't believe that mothers never came across that thought. I think that's impossible. I don't think women can be so cold not to have some kind of regret, even a little. I guess there are some situations many women can't. But I know a thought of what it could've did cross their minds.
This poem answered some of my questions, and gave me some insight on some of their deep feelings. Another thing I liked about this poem, is that you could actually vision what she's saying:
You remember the children you got that you did not get
The damp small pulps with a litle or no hair
You will never neglect or beat
Them, or silence or buy them with a sweet.
I have eased
My dim dears at the breasts they could never suck.
If I poisoned the beginnings of your breaths,
Believe that even in my deliberateness I was not deliberate.
Though why should I wine,
Whine that the crime was other than mine?
Believe me, I loved you all.
Believe me, I knew you, though faintly, and I loved, I loved
you
All.
I really loved the ending of the poem, it could be the guilt, and regret the reason for what she's saying. Or maybe she had a lot of abortions, or maybe she's referring to all the unborn children. But anyhow it can relate to any mother. I still think women look back on what it could've been. Overall, this poem is touching.
